A note on reading the evidence.
An average gives you a place to begin reading, not a description of every participant. Look for information about how widely individual results differed and how certain the estimate is. If a report offers only a group summary, leave room in your notes for that missing detail. Also check whether a sentence about what participants experienced has become a promise about what a person should expect. For a care discussion, it is more useful to ask how a group result might inform a question than to treat the average as a personal forecast.
Questions to open a conversation.
- What information shows how much individual results varied within the group?
- How does the report describe uncertainty around its average estimate?
- Does the summary turn a group result into a personal expectation?
