A note on reading the evidence.
Notice what sits on the other side of a comparison. If a report describes change from a starting value, ask whether it also compares that change with another group. These approaches address different questions: what happened over time, and what difference there was between the alternatives being studied. Before bringing a percentage to a discussion, write down which comparison produced it. Check that the headline uses the same comparison. A statement about improvement over time should not quietly become a statement that one option outperformed another.
Questions to open a conversation.
- Is the result compared with a starting value or another group?
- Were the alternatives assessed over the same period with the same measure?
- Does the headline describe the comparison that produced the reported result?
